A high level of sustainable refurbishment of a typical three-bedroom terraced house was required within a tight budget in order to deliver an exemplar building as an exhibition house for the Decent Homes Standards for Fareham Borough Council and First Wessex.

SRE developed a Sustainability Route Map outlining progressive levels of refurbishment, and associated energy savings and relevant standards achieved, to enable a cost-benefit analysis to be undertaken by the Project Team. Through the inclusion of cavity wall and loft insulation, a new boiler and an E/W split 2.4kWp PV array the building achieved a SAP rating of 87 (B). The site was one of only 16 being assessed as part of a national pilot for the new BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment methodology, with SRE supporting BRE in establishing the technical guidance and the building achieved a ‘Very Good’ rating.
